IG

Company Review: IG

The first spreadbetting company in the world, IG is the granddaddy of the industry and now has more than 140,000 customers and operates in 89 countries all around the world.

Originally established in 1974, IG remains at the forefront of the spreadbetting industry and continues to offer innovative and new products. Here are the key facts that you should know.

More on IG

As you would expect from the company that launched spreadbetting, the range of markets available to trade is huge. IG offers the opportunity to spreadbet on shares, indices, forex, commodities, sectors and interest rates. Options and binary bets are also available.

IG offers a range of ways to trade, including its award-winning web-based platform. The company says this platform executes more than 99% of trades in less than 0.1 seconds, with over 99% core stability measured over a two-year period.

Linking in with the web-based platform is the new tool known as Insight. This provides not just the facility to trade but also live data, analysis and information about what other traders are doing. This information is, of course, anonymised.

The web-based platform is also available in a version specifically designed for use with the iPad, with a fully customisable interface and simple scroll, tap and swipe functions. There are also mobile applications for trading on the go for iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows 7.

Company Details

Due to the volume of trades executed with IG, quite literally millions every month, the most competitive spreads can be passed on to the customer. Forex spreads start from just 0.8 pips whilst trading on the indices begins with a 1 point spread.

The minimum stake varies but in some markets is set as low as 20p. The minimum deposit required to start trading depends on the stake and the deposit factor which differs from market to market. The deposit factor is the way of setting the margin and refers to the minimum amount which must be held in the account to cover any potential losses.

IG offers an even lower minimum stake to customers who register for a TradeSense account. This is designed to help traders who are less experienced and allows bets of just 10p, slowly increasing in increments over six weeks whilst at the same time delivering a series of educational modules via email. There is also a dedicated helpline for these less experienced traders.
